Artist's note: I love drawing the historic gear of the vaquero. The handcrafted leather and sterling silver of the headstall and the skillfully woven horsehair mecate reins are a challenge to draw, but I'm inspired to capture the artistry of those craftsmen who made them. This drawing of a larger than life close-up of a Quarter Horse's face is part of my ongoing series exploring the heritage of the Western horse and his gear. This horse is wearing a traditional vaquero headstall with a horsehair mecate rope attached to his bosal.
