Collection: Kathryn Merrill

Kathryn’s artwork focuses on the livestock and activities of ranching families. Her early childhood on her grandparents’ ranch near Winnett, Montana started a passion for the western lifestyle and the ranch horses that she strives to share with her viewer. Through the years, she has taken every opportunity to spend time with and photograph these hard-working and fun-loving families in their day-to-day lives.

In addition to her artwork, Kathryn enjoys riding and showing her American Quarter Horses in the Limited Cowhorse Boxing, Ranch Riding and Versatility Ranch Horse classes. The time she spends with her horses improving her horsemanship also improves her knowledge of her subject and her ability to portray them in a realistic manner.

She works in colored pencil, pastel pencil, graphite, and oil. Her art education has been informal. Much of it has been generously shared by the many mentors and teachers she has studied with, as well as books, museums and other resources. She appreciates those who have encouraged her to pursue her talent, especially the loving support she has received from her family.

“I feel blessed to have been bestowed with the God given gift of visual storytelling and I want to share the story of the people who still possess the values and character that our great country was founded on the American Ranching Family.”
